The United States of Africa

Introduction:

The United States of Africa was formed from the bloody aftermath of two centuries of conflict, plague, and warfare with a single, powerful, and unified space-faring nation with sovereign control over what is (during the 20th century) most of Africa, except what was Egypt, northern Sudan, Eastern Libya, and the northern areas of Tunesia, Algeria, and Morocco. The nation has the Solar System's most powerful economy by a large margin and has influence all over the Solar System.

The Culture:

USAfrica has been a nation since the early 23rd century after a long and bloody conflict that followed the collapse of the world economy and plague that itself began in the early 21st century. However, the cultural history of Africa as a whole is relatively recent. Africa is a nation of hundreds of cultures, thousands of languages, and millions of peoples across just as many landscapes. The very idea of a culture of "Africa" is a bit aberrant despite the unified infrastructure but with the entire continent unified under one government, this has been shifting over many decades. As such, the culture and language is often different and variable depending upon your geographic location, based upon some of the most ancient cultures in human history and others that are much more recent.

Although USAfrica has adopted an official language and a secondary language (English and French, respectively), dozens if not hundreds of languages are spoken all across the country and this is a key factor in why the cultures can be so variable from location to location. Many of these languages have spread across the Solar System due to colonization and expansion and the resulting trade and influencing cultures but have not replaced English as the dominant trade language in the world and even within Africa.

Christianity and Islam are major religions across Africa (though Christianity constitutes a larger portion of the electorate), although the influence they possess upon government has been waning over the decades due to increasing trends toward secularism in governance.

The Government:

USAfrica elects representatives into a three-body federal government similar to a sort of combination of the United States' Constitutional Republic and that of England's Constitutional Monarchy where a Parliament is elected through the (direct) democratic process, the position of King or Queen is hereditary, and the Supreme Court is approved by an electorate system by the governments of each state. There is a separation of powers, but the parliament is the most powerful body, followed by the Supreme Court, and the ruling Monarch.

The Capital of USAfrica is the City of Brazzaville.

The Economy:

The modern economy of USAfrica is rooted in its deep manufacturing and technology base and vast resources that in the past were inefficiently exploited and squandered due to corruption in its distant past, but this is no longer the case. In USAfrica's early days, the regulatory body against private enterprise was light to almost non-existent but several protests and human/worker's rights revolutions changed this landscape in later decades. Currently, the economy is experiencing a major paradigm shift due to cheap and widely available robotic workers thanks to their advanced AI that has affected the economic landscape, the political landscape, and the cultural landscape.

The Military:

USAfrica has the most powerful military in the Solar System with air, space, land, and water branches that influence nearly every area of the Earth and a recently established branch that extends into space, especially around Earth and Luna but with the intention of establishing a military presence on Mars. The military uses a mixture of robotic and human personnel with military robots as the primary infantry using human special forces.

The USAfrica uses high tech war machines for air, land, sea, and space and can quickly adapt to any combat situation on the fly and regarding long-term planning. The African military is highly flexible, highly trained, and technologically advanced.

Confederate American Republic

Introduction:
The New Confederacy was created from a group of Martian colonies that themselves were created as libertarian experimental societies from individuals and companies that fled what they perceived as overbearing government powers on Earth. The colonies largely consisted of North American, Australian, European, and African private citizens that wished to create a libertarian-style society. After several decades of established contact and trade, they chose to formalize their relationship under a singular if minimalist government created under radical anarcho-capitalist ideals where the influence of government was strictly minimal and kept under tight control.

For better or worse, this nation has kept to those ideals and even rolled back many government powers as the decades wore on as private industry took on more and more government roles in society on the auspicious desire of promoting maximal individualism and freedom. It was to be the freest and most successful society to ever exist. The result was a nation that would itself become a superpower with influence and trade across the entire Solar System.

The Culture:

Like many other nations, the Confederate American Republic (the Confederacy) has a wide variety of cultures between the individual colonies, but they all united under their desire for personal liberty and freedom. Due to the extreme wealth disparity there exists a sort of informal chaste system based on individual wealth, It permeates the lifestyles of even the impoverished as they make their lives in the harsh Martian environment. This includes the ruling wealthy class, the valuable skilled class, and the impoverished. The impoverished have a culture of rugged individualism in a romanticized view of the American frontiersman. The skilled class tend to have a mix of a sort of mercenary culture and corporate freelance culture. The wealthy over-class have a sort of Ayn Randian Objectivist culture where they believe that they are a sort of chosen class of the most talented and creative entrepreneurs.

The Christian and Catholic religions are also prevalent at all levels of society (despite the influence of Ayn Rand's objectivist culture) and a sort of fundamental patriotism that includes a sort of "god, guns, and country" ideology that pervades all levels of Confederate Culture.

The Government:

When the country was first formed, the Confederate government was to be a tribunal of democratically elected officials with representatives from each colony elected by popular vote. This would include a supreme court of justices appointed by this tribunal and a president that would also be elected by popular vote who could lead in times of crisis or war.

Unlike most countries, this government's power was severely limited. In the early decades, the government had the power to create and maintain a military (as well as act in the defense of the nation) and enforce contracts and property through a system of courts and police enforcement. New laws are difficult to create by design and require a popular vote before it can be enacted and enforced.

Many changes were made in the decades following under the idea that even this power was too much for the government to handle and many further reductions of government power, at least in the area of the government's control over the military. The Confederate government is still duty-bound to defend the nation, but it can not create its own military, being forced now to hire its military from private companies.

Further, although the government has its own court system and uses police to enforce those laws, the police forces around the country have since been privatized and there exist privately owned court systems to handle disputes backed by their own police forces.

The result is that the government of the Confederacy is entirely impotent.

The Capital of the Confederate American Republic is in the City of Reagan in a small crater (unnamed in the 20th century) now aptly named Galt's Gulch. The most powerful business leaders often meet in a headquarters built for this purpose in its own secret habitat about 14 km from Reagan.

The actual power of this nation lies entirely within the ruling wealthy class as they control virtually all of the nation's assets. Although the Confederacy itself considers itself a free Libertarian nation, the UN considers it to be an Aristocratic Oligarchy, though the Confederacy heavily disputes this and considers it slander.

The Economy:

The power of the Confederate economy comes from the success of the companies and wealthy individuals that use the nation as their headquarters and/or live within the borders. Nearly anything can be made, bought, or sold here. The lack of regulatory power or government interference also attracts companies from other nations, though it tends to draw the ire of other nations, because they often see those companies as willing to exploit people in often unscrupulous ways. It's also a tourist attraction for wealthy individuals from other nations and planets for all of the wrong reasons.

The Military:

Since the constitutional amendment to end the government's ability to create and maintain a military, the Confederate government technically has no military and instead spends its taxpayer dollars on buying an army of mercenaries, many of which specifically per government contract.

This mercenary army is the third most powerful military (overall) in the Solar System. It possesses many similar capabilities of the USAfrican military in terms of flexibility, power, and military hardware, but the military is neither as loyal to the Confederacy nor as capable as a cohesive whole due to differences in culture, equipment, training, and personnel between the individual mercenary units due to the policy of the controlling companies.

Saonearus

Introduction:
Unlike the Confederate American Republic, Saonearus was not formed from a coalition of pre-existing nations but the colonies that constitute this nation were formed expressly for the purpose of creating this nation in the later part of the 23rd century. Only within the last twenty years did the nation achieve the status as a superpower.

The nation was created for the purpose to provide a true experimental society using a largely utopian communist philosophy. Whether or not this nation was truly successful in this attempt is unknown as the nation is highly secretive and does not export its culture. The first colony was funded largely by Chinese communists and thus the majority of the colonists were ethnically Chinese, but colonists from all over Earth joined the attempt.

Of all the superpowers in the Sol System (and even the non-superpowers), Saonearus is a very small nation and is in a relatively resource-poor location on Mars. The nation achieved its superpower status supposedly despite this fact partially thanks to the fact that it imports a lot of natural resources (including from its main rival, the Confederacy) and exports a great deal of manufactured goods, electronics, and other goods and services.

The Culture:
The known culture of Saonearus has been leaked through numerous channels, including those that emigrate from Saonearus and journalists that have entered and existed the nation both with and without the government's permission. The citizens of Saonearus seem to live in a culture without crime, the need for money or healthcare, or a want of things. Nothing appears to be "imposed" upon its population and the presence of the government is virtually invisible to the general population. There are no police within the borders, but the military responds to any internal security concerns though the military is not used as a police force. The standard of living appears even higher than that of the other superpowers.

Free enterprise technically does not exist within the borders, but its citizens are essentially free to make, give away, trade, and generally do anything normally attributed to a free society.

To those with the drive and energy, things just seem to happen in a way that allows them to achieve what they want and overriding culture of Saonearus seems to surround this fact. This seems to happen almost as though it was preplanned this way and things just seem to come together in such a manner as that its citizens tend to get what they want. This allows its citizens to live with one another despite having cultures unique to families or cliques or other groups even diametrically opposed to others living next to and even amongst one another despite been violently opposed to one another elsewhere in the Solar System. Most individuals that visit report that the people themselves seem... off though few people seem to know or understand why and has been the subject of considerable speculation. Those that have lived in Saonearus and emigrated away have an easy time adapting to their new homes and seem genuine but others find them strange and in a different way that immigrants are different. Those that immigrate into Saonearus find that they have left their previous hang-up and inhibitions in their previous life and appear to have undergone a complete change to their personality. Since all immigrants of Saonearus undergo an extensive health examination, there are numerous theories as to what this entails both logical and absurd but the truth of the matter is entirely unknown (whether those theorists choose to admit it or not). All citizens both current and former are allowed to return to Saonearus for continued health examinations

Given the above, the culture of Saonearus appears to be that of enthusiastic industriousness. Because its citizens are all put through an extensive education program from childhood to adulthood and receive support from birth to adulthood, the population in general is generally well educated and swiftly move to their life goals as soon as they feel able. The citizens generally have an unusually chipper "can-do" attitude that permeates the culture. Many of those citizens tend to become scientists, engineers, manufacturers, and other valuable and skilled roles in society with robots filling any needed but otherwise unfilled roles.

Individually, people seem generally happy, rational, and adaptable - even if they weren't prior to living in Saonearus.

Saonearus is a generally secular state with no state religion of any kind, though its citizens are free to practice the religion of their choice, though most do only out of tradition with few serious practitioners.

The Government:
As much as people learned about the culture of Saonearus, few have learned anything substantial about the government to the extent that there is no state capital and buildings and other habitats for government purpose are (believed to be) classified or simply non-existent as government affairs are handled by direct democratic vote, though no such vote has occurred on public record outside of the nation.

The Economy:
Saonearus has a powerful economy despite the relative lack of available natural resources due to a strong manufacturing base. The economy is dependent upon the nation's scientific contributions, technological achievements and innovations, and other manufactured and electronic goods. Saonearus is the most technologically advanced nation in the Solar System due to its strong culture of scientific achievement and education. Although individuals often head economic enterprises within the nation and "face" with outsiders as a private company would, all such trade interactions is technically with the government given that "money" ceases to have meaning between individuals within the nation as capital moves seamlessly (and perhaps even unconsciously) in day-to-day life. However, trade with other nations is performed like any other.

The Military:
Saonearus possesses the smallest military and it has had relatively few engagements, but its military is the highest trained and most technologically advanced of all of Sol's militaries. Although it's been used in small engagements with the Confederacy's mercenary armies time and time again, it has never undergone a full engagement. Their soldiers are often heavily modified with cybertechnology, extensive gene therapy, and nanotech colonies. All of Saonearus' military hardware are fully automated with highly advanced AI.

The Saonearus Military does not appear to have individual military branches as other militaries often do.

Lunastaria

Introduction:
Lunasaria was formed from the first colonies on Luna, Earth's moon, over the course of over 200 years of colonization and development. The first colonies were established shortly after the first space elevators were built on Earth. Although later colonies would be more homogenous culturally, the first colonies was established from a far greater mix of international peoples, cultures, and races.

Unlike many of the colonies to follow elsewhere on the Moon and on Mars, none of first colonies (since the construction of the space elevators) began under the control of any government. This was partly due to a preexisting UN treaty banning the ownership of private property off of Earth's soil and partly because the first colonists were escaping on collectively purchased spacecrafts to start new lives away from the issues on their homeworld.

The Culture:

The modern Lunastarian culture has evolved from hodgepodge of different Terran cultures from all over the world.
